Welcome to our Festival de la Grande Eglise Website! We hope you find this website informative and easy to use.
St. Landry Catholic Church is hosting the inaugural “Festival de la Grande Eglise” October 10, 2015. We are very excited about this event as a celebration of our local community and its history. The festival is intended also to be a fundraiser to help defray the costs of maintaining historic St. Landry Cemetery, which was built at a time when cemetery endowments did not exist, but rather families cared for cemeteries and the tombs of their loved ones. With over 4,000 tomb sites, maintenance is both difficult and expensive. At the festival, not only is the local community invited, but we are reaching out to all who have roots in our church community to “come home” and visit our beautiful and historic church and grounds.
The festival will have many activities that will provide family entertainment for all ages, and includes a 2 mile color fun run/walk for which there will be printed t-shirts (t-shirts will also be made for the festival), jambalaya cook off, youth activity area, silent auction, sweet shop, Grande Église (Big Church) tours, bingos, raffles, delicious concessions and foot stomping music. Mass will be held at 4pm in the Grande Église (church), and the day will be capped off with our annual Cemetery Tours which will begin after Mass.
The Festival de la Grande Eglise is being coordinated with the various Opelousas and St. Landry Parish tourism commissions, and we hope that many who have roots in our community will come home to visit. We believe our venue is an ideal way to showcase our Opelousas community and her history, and we hope to see you here!
